Moving and transitioning to a new home, perhaps an entirely different location, is stressful. Chances are you are running on adrenaline in the upcoming weeks and days before the move.
Once your moving day is over, there is still lots of work for you, but it’s good to take some time to relax and unwind. Here are seven things you can try as you settle in after your household move.
1. Grab Coffee With a Friend
If you still live near people you know, grab coffee with a friend. Even just an hour of chatting might do wonders for your body and mind. Try to stay away from discussing your current stresses. Instead, discuss other topics or happy things you plan for your new home.
2. Go Out for a Nice Meal
You may not feel like cooking a meal until you have settled in. As an alternative to eating sandwiches among the moving boxes, take your family to a nice meal at a favorite restaurant. If any other friends and family helped you move, invite them to join you to eat as a thank-you. This way, you catch a breather, have a good conversation, and maybe even a few good laughs before you dig into the unpacking process.
3. Take a Walk
Walking is a terrific way to release endorphins and help the body relax. Plan an hour to take a nice walk around your new community. It’ll allow you to break away from the chaos of moving. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore your new surroundings. Maybe even meet a few neighbors along the way.
4. Take in a Movie
Is there a movie theater nearby or within reasonable driving distance? If you’re not under a significant time crunch, catch the latest comedy, thriller, or family-friendly flick. A movie is a nice reprieve from the stresses associated with moving and gives your muscles a break.
5. Order Takeout and Stream a Movie
If you have no time to go out or going out adds more stress, consider ordering some yummy takeout and having it delivered and stream a movie. It’s an excellent way to relax. Besides, it’s an opportunity to check out the restaurants in your neighborhood – you might find something you’ve never tried or always wanted to try!
6. Do Some Reading
Reading is an excellent way to escape the pressures of the day and transport you somewhere else. Find a quiet corner at home, a coffee shop, or even the library to curl up with a good book for an hour or two.
7. Put on Some Music
Sure, you can listen to music as you work. However, you can also put something on that’s calming to listen to and take a rest. Then, sit back with your eyes closed for an hour or so. Maybe you’ll even catch some shut-eye to rejuvenate you.
